The Japanese technique of yakisugi (using flame to burn the wood's surface) was applied to the outside and inside of this small Ambrosia Maple bowl. Once burned, the wood was stiff-brushed to remove the softer charred woodgrain and leave the swirling ridges of harder grain. The bowl was then sealed all over with a food-safe penetrating oil to preserve and smooth the surface.
